Our system for matching those who need with those who would like to help suffered a hiatus during the pandemic but is getting back in place as members feel more confident getting out and about. As we are quite a large group we have several different ways to meet and stay in touch, develop friendships and shared interests. SSIP Kingston had been meeting on Monday mornings for breakfast and chat at the Olympic Diner on Washington Avenue since its inception. The pandemic stopped that for a while, and then the Diner sadly disappeared into a large storage space. However a group continues to meet at 9:30am at the Dietz Diner, on the corner of North Front and Washington Avenue, every Monday. Starting in June, we also meet outside on Mondays a little later, 10:30am, at the Hasbrouck Park pavilion, off Delaware Avenue. For those who wanted an alternative to Monday, we started having Thursday picnic lunches in the summer at Robert Post Park overlooking the river. From the end of May till the end of October we have been gathering by the river, every Thursday from 12 noon on. Like Hasbrouck Park, you can drive right up to where we sit, which makes it easy for those with mobility issues. This winter, we continue the Thursday picnic lunches, masked and socially distanced, at the Senior Hub on Albany Avenue, graciously hosted by the Office for the Aging. We also have weekly zoom meetings for those who cannot make breakfast at the Diner, at 10:30 every Monday throughout the winter. These meetings, together with a weekly online zoom throughout the pandemic, have helped maintain connections and grow friendships. Some with mutual interests have made their own arrangements, including the Thursday Walkers. This group meets on Thursday mornings at various trails, depending on weather and the time of the year, 10:30am in the morning in the colder months, and in the summer they try to meet earlier to avoid the heat. We have a lot to offer seniors in and around Kingston who are looking to enlarge their social circle and we welcome newcomers who are interested in remaining independent and helping others do the same. Please contact us using the telephone number below if you have questions. Annual membership fee is $25 per person, but scholarships are available. Each year we donate funds and many members join in donating gifts to those in need in our community. Please scroll down to see more photos, photos by courtesy of member Gloria Waslyn
