Seniors Serving in Place is a group of neighbor communities in Ulster County, in New York’s Hudson Valley. Our mission is to help our members remain independent and stay in their own homes as we age.

We meet regularly to discuss members’ needs, share useful information and just catch up.

More about SSIP

SSIP began in the spring of 2011, when a group of neighbors gathered to discuss how they might help one another. Our goal was to build a community and help each other stay independent in our own homes.

We have nurses, business people, artists, homemakers, computer specialists, doctors, lawyers, educators: people with all kinds of skills.

How we help members

We all need help at one time or another, and many people are hesitant to ask. So our members tell us the ways in which they can help. A List Manager, reached on our special phone, answers calls for help by finding a volunteer on the list to match the need.

When you join, your name goes on the list to call, and of course you can ask for help too.

How you can help

Read aloud, or make a phone call and check up on a neighbor. One person needed a ride to and from the doctor for treatment, another just needed someone to bring her walker up from the basement, another needed a ride to a meeting at night.

All kinds of neighborly help are possible: walking the dog, watering the plants, or going for a walk, to the movies or doing a puzzle together. Sociability is a big part of SSIP.

Service providers and discounts

We recommend service providers, such as contractors, handymen, electricians and gardeners, who offer our group discounts.

And by getting together regularly, we’re always exchanging information that makes our lives easier and more enjoyable.
